Ebrima John Calls for End to Police Brutality

Africa-Press – Gambia. Ebrima John, a youth leader speaking in the wake of the death of 27-year-old Omar Badjie, has called for an end to police brutality in The Gambia, insisting that those responsible for Omar’s death must face justice. Badjie allegedly died after being beaten by police officers.

“Police brutality is becoming too much in this country as if they are angry with Gambians,” John said, emphasizing that this incident should be the last of its kind.

He reminded security officers that their uniforms are temporary, stressing that once their service ends, they will return to live among the very communities they are meant to protect. For that reason, he urged them to uphold respect and dignity in their treatment of citizens.

John vowed that Omar’s case would not be ignored or forgotten. “We do not want it to be brushed under the carpet.” he declared, adding that the call for justice is not only for the present generation but also for future ones. He appealed directly to the government, particularly the Minister of Interior, to ensure accountability.

“We do not want to be here for the next month and don’t hear anything on this issue. We are going to take an independent autopsy,” John stated.

Responding to these concerns, Interior Minister Abdoulie Sanyang assured the family and community that the case would be handled transparently. He announced that a magistrate would be appointed to preside over the matter in an open court, promising, “It will not be a hidden investigation.”

John delivered his remarks during the minister’s visit to Omar Badjie’s family compound, where the government delegation conveyed condolences and pledged that justice would prevail.
