Ebrima Nyang, Administrative Secretary of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), has accused Dr. Ismaila Ceesay—leader of the Citizens’ Alliance (CA) and Minister of Information—of betraying his party and political ideals by aligning himself with President Adama Barrow and the ruling National People’s Party (NPP).
Nyang made the remarks in response to statements Dr. Ceesay delivered at a recent NPP rally, where the Information Minister reportedly questioned GDC leader Hon. Mama Kandeh’s leadership and ability to manage his party.
In a strongly worded reaction, Nyang alleged that Dr. Ceesay had “sold his soul and party to President Barrow” after previously criticizing him.
“I would like Dr. Ismaila Ceesay to know that the one who can’t manage his own party is the one who sold his soul and party to the President after attacking him with all sorts of disrespectful words,” he said.
He further claims that Dr. Ceesay has been reduced to a political instrument for President Barrow, abandoning the principles he once championed. According to him, Ceesay was once admired by younger generations but has now become President Barrow’s weapon against opposition leaders.
“All the opposition leaders attacked by Dr. Ceesay are still able to stand for their parties and beliefs in their mission for this country. There is none of them that has vomited and eaten it back,” Nyang added.
Nyang also compared the Citizens’ Alliance to his own party, claiming the CA has lost political relevance.
“If Kandeh was not able to manage the GDC, then by now the GDC would have been like Citizen Alliance a party with less than 100 votes,” He stated.
He went on to accuse Dr. Ceesay of hypocrisy, saying the Minister now supports the very government he once condemned.
“You are better than what you are doing now, the most embarrassing thing is being used to go against everything you have ever said to the NPP and Barrow. Barrow has appointed you to destroy you completely because making you the Minister of Information is to get back at you on all the attacks you ever made against him and his government,” Nyang charged.
The GDC Administrative Secretary also accused Dr. Ceesay of “burying” the Citizens’ Alliance shortly after its registration, despite collecting public donations to establish it.
“You buried the Citizen Alliance upon registration after months of seeking donations from the poor people to get the needed 1million to register CA,” he said.
Nyang concluded that the GDC remains active and relevant in Gambian politics, unlike the Citizens’ Alliance, which he described as “defunct.” He said Hon. Kandeh has no intention of engaging in political exchanges with Dr. Ceesay.
“Hon Kandeh doesn’t have your time but the one who is using you to attack him,” he concluded.
