Africa-Press – Gambia. The Embassy on Saturday, August 23 2025 held a cultural event at its premises in Washington D.C. in concert with Thingstodo DC, a Washington DC based organization.
Sixty-three (63) participants attended the event which includes former U.S. foreign diplomats and spouses. The event familiarized the audience with the rich and diverse Gambian culture and traditions. It featured live kora performance and screenings of short films that highlight the sights and sounds of The Gambia and local Gambian cuisine – fonio and peanut soup.
In her welcoming remarks on behalf of the Ambassador, Mrs. Oumie Jobe – Jarra, Counselor, thanked the audience for coming to the Embassy to attend the cultural evening. She said the event was meant to showcase the unique features of The Gambia which make it an enviable tourist destination.
For his part, Mr. Saikou Ceesay, First Secretary and Coordinator of the event, took the audience through the origins of the United States – Gambia relations and how it transformed from the 17th century to date. He elaborated on the people-to-people connection which he said has contributed a lot towards the socio-economic development of The Gambia. Mr. Ceesay further highlighted the political and diplomatic partnership that the two countries enjoy adding that the two countries are strong allies since the Second World War and have shared common values of respect for human rights, human dignity, the sanctity of life and the rule of law.
