Energy Ministry Launches National Energy Compact

Africa-Press – Gambia. The Ministry of Petroleum, Energy, and Mines has formally launched The Gambia’s National Energy Compact during the Mission 300 Africa Energy Summit, held on September 24, 2025, in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

The initiative is part of a continent-wide programme aimed at achieving universal electricity access by 2030. Developed under the Mission 300 (M300) framework—a joint initiative of the World Bank and the African Development Bank—the program seeks to connect an additional 300 million people across Africa to electricity by the end of the decade.

“With its own goal of attaining universal electricity access by 2026, The Gambia has joined the M300 initiative and is working closely with partners to achieve this goal,” the ministry stated.

The Compact is structured around five strategic pillars: infrastructure expansion, regional integration, last-mile connectivity, private sector participation, and financial sustainability. It outlines a comprehensive pipeline of projects spanning electricity generation, transmission, distribution, off-grid solutions, and the clean cooking subsector.

“These projects are designed to achieve universal access, expand renewable energy capacity, and ensure the reliability and resilience of the power system,” the ministry added.

According to the ministry, the programme will require an estimated US$552 million in financing from a mix of public and private sources, including multilateral institutions and philanthropic organizations.

Describing the initiative as “a bold and transformative vision for The Gambia’s energy future,” the ministry underscored that its success will depend on strong political will, effective institutional frameworks, and sustained collaboration with development partners and private investors.

Reaffirming its commitment to the Compact’s objectives, the Ministry of Petroleum, Energy, and Mines called on all stakeholders to work together to achieve universal electricity access, accelerate economic growth, and enhance the quality of life for all Gambians.
