Essa Faal Blames Barrow Administration for Deepening Poverty in the Gambia

Africa-Press – Gambia. Essa Mbye Faal, the Party Leader and Secretary General of the APP-Sobeya Party, has launched a scathing critique of President Adama Barrow’s administration, accusing it of worsening poverty in The Gambia through poor economic management.

Speaking in a recent interview with Gambia Talents TV, Faal expressed alarm over the country’s deteriorating economic situation, citing the rapid depreciation of the dalasi and rising living costs as key factors burdening ordinary citizens.

“The country is hard. Anybody that you meet In this country is facing challenges. People are tired,” Faal said. “Few months ago, the dollar was 60 Dalasi, but today it is 70 something, Barrow Government is making the Gambians get poorer by the day because what you have today if it values 20 dollars tomorrow it might value 3 dollars. It is like people are getting poorer by the day,” he said.

Faal also took aim at what he described as “Barrownomics”—his term for the Barrow administration’s economic approach, which he claims is dominated by borrowing and unchecked spending.

“But the “Barrownomics” which is the Barrow system of economics is you borrow and spend. That is what is happening in the country. Borrowing and spending is easy, just have someone to borrow and you will spend,” he said. “The country’s economy will go down, and you will be bragging that you are working, but you are making the people suffer. That is what is happening here,”

According to Faal, the effects of this strategy are being felt across the country, as many Gambians struggle to meet basic needs such as education, rent, and healthcare. He stressed the importance of honest leadership and vowed to be a voice for the people.

“It is important for us to have people in the country that will tell people what is disturbing them and I have volunteered to be part of those people, to tell people their problems and look for solutions,” he said.

Faal also gave an update on his recent work at the International Criminal Court (ICC), announcing that he had filed a warrant of arrest for the president of Myanmar in connection with the Rohingya genocide case. He added that further warrants targeting senior military officials are forthcoming.

“I was doing the Rohingya case at the ICC, With the help of God I have file warrant of arrest application for the Myanmar President and I will be filing other warrants of arrest for the Senior Members of the Myanmar Military,” he revealed.

However, Faal disclosed that he has since stepped down from his role at the ICC in order to devote himself fully to Gambian politics.

“But I have resigned from ICC so that I can concentrate fully on Gambia’s politics. I am back for good. I am sure to the inconvenience of a lot of people, I will focus 100% on politics. I will continue to work for the ICC as a consultant, but I will focus full-time on politics. The reason I am doing that is because the country is hard,” he said.
