Famara Singhateh Launches Republican People'S Party

Africa-Press – Gambia. Famara Singhateh, a Gambian political aspirant based in the United States and a native of Badibou Saba, has officially launched a new political party—the Republican People’s Party (RPP)—with the stated aim of “rescuing the nation” and contesting The Gambia’s 2026 presidential elections. The party is currently awaiting final registration from the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

In an audio address to supporters via WhatsApp, Singhateh said the formation of the RPP stems from frustration with decades of poor governance, deepening poverty, and deteriorating living standards. He said the country needs a new kind of leadership rooted in accountability and national renewal.

“I have accepted the leadership of the Republican People’s Party, which was created to salvage our country. I am ready to lead The Gambia toward a better future,” Singhateh declared.

The RPP leader lamented the country’s slow progress since independence, noting that the socio-economic conditions of ordinary Gambians have worsened in recent years. He called for unity among citizens to drive meaningful change.

“Let us unite to move the country forward. Sixty years after independence, our farmers are struggling, markets are hard, the health system is crumbling, women die in labor, and our hospitals lack basic medicines,” he said.

Singhateh sharply criticized the state of key sectors—education, health, security, and the economy—describing them as evidence of systemic failure.

“Our education system is weak, unemployment is high, and citizens no longer feel safe in their homes or workplaces. Those in government care only for themselves, not for the people,” he argued.

He further accused the current administration of mismanagement and warned against extending mandates for leaders who, he said, have failed to deliver. “Someone who has spent ten years mismanaging the country now wants another term. We are saying no to that,” Singhateh asserted.

According to him, the Republican People’s Party will focus on restructuring public institutions, revitalizing agriculture, improving healthcare, creating jobs, and strengthening national security.

“The RPP is here to end the suffering of Gambians, ensure equal opportunities for all, and restore discipline, accountability, and fairness in governance,” he said.

Singhateh emphasized that his party’s vision is to build a system where national resources benefit every Gambian, not just a privileged few.

His long-time friend Omar Colley publicly endorsed Singhateh’s candidacy, describing him as a dedicated and visionary leader. “As his childhood friend, I have been with him from the very beginning of this journey, offering my full support every step of the way,” Colley stated.
