Africa-Press – Gambia. The President of the National Coordinating Organization for Farmers Associations, The Gambia (NACOFAG), Mr. Musa Sowe, has expressed optimism that a bumper harvest will be achieved during the 2025 cropping season.
His remarks followed a four-day tour of agricultural project intervention sites across the country, aimed at monitoring and evaluating progress in this season.
Mr. Sowe notes that this year’s productivity is significantly bolstered by government support through targeted interventions facilitated by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food Security.
Speaking on behalf of farmers, he says the season is proving exceptionally fruitful, with many reporting remarkable yields.
One farmer described the harvest as historic, attributing the success to government initiatives that include the provision of high-quality seeds, land ploughing services, and access to tractors on a loan basis. Across the country, farmers have welcomed the government’s measures to enhance agricultural production, including the distribution of 60 subsidized tractors with a 25% subsidy, allowing the remaining cost to be paid over four years. Subsidized fertilizers, seeds, and other farming inputs have also been made widely available.
Mr. Sowe highlighted that these interventions are designed to promote mechanization, improve food security, and enhance farmers’ profitability. Key projects such as ROOTS, GIRAV, GAFSP, P2P2RS, GAMBISAL, and the Rice Project Initiative have expanded support to numerous communities and farmers, covering crops such as rice, vegetables, maize, poultry, cashew, horticulture, groundnuts, millet, and findi.
He further conveys that farmers are grateful to President Adama Barrow and Hon. Dr. Demba Sabally, Minister of Agriculture, for their dedication to revitalizing the agricultural sector and providing tangible support that has contributed to this promising season.
