Africa-Press – Gambia. Omar Ceesay, former National Assembly Member for Niamina East Constituency and a member of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), has urged the United Democratic Party (UDP) and Talib Ahmed Bensouda, leader of the Unite Movement for Change (UMC), to put aside political differences and work together ahead of the 2026 general elections.
Ceesay said unity among opposition parties is crucial for mounting an effective challenge to the ruling government, stressing that no single opposition party can succeed on its own.
“Talib should not see the UDP as a political enemy, and the same goes for the UDP regarding Talib. Both parties have the opportunity to unite as stakeholders and work together with other groups in potential coalition discussions. This partnership could help protect the country from Uncle Sam (President Barrow) and his allies,” Ceesay said.
The former lawmaker emphasized that building alliances based on shared national priorities rather than personal political ambitions is essential for advancing the country’s democratic progress.
“As it stands, no opposition can successfully unseat Uncle Sam (President Barrow) without the support of other parties. Therefore, let us focus on our shared values and embrace one another for the greater good of the citizens, rather than prioritizing our individual interests as key players,” he said.
Ceesay’s comments come amid growing discussions about potential opposition coalitions ahead of the 2026 elections, as parties weigh strategies to consolidate support and strengthen their chances at the polls.
