Africa-Press – Gambia. Former Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr is one of three candidates for the Mali national team coaching job.

The other two candidates for the job are German Winfried Schafer and former Mali international Eric Chelle.

Following the Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the Malian football federation (FEMAFOOT) fired head coach Mohamed Magassouba on April 1.

Afrik Foot reports that 57 candidates have submitted their credentials.

Rohr, 68, is a strong candidate with immense club and international experience.

He is best known for leading Nigeria’s Super Eagles to qualification for the 2018 World Cup and a third-place finish at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Rohr has also managed Gabon, Niger and Burkina Faso.

In the coming days, FEMAFOOT will conduct final interviews before announcing their choice about a month before the start of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers.

Mali are in Group G of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which also includes Congo, Gambia, and South Sudan.
