Africa-Press – Gambia. In a dramatic turn of events, Mr. Alieu Jallow, the former Registrar General, has been arrested on charges of contempt for allegedly providing false testimony and tampering with evidence during a parliamentary inquiry.

The arrest was ordered by the National Assembly’s Special Select Committee investigating the sale and disposal of assets identified by the Janneh Commission.

The inquiry focused on the disposal of assets linked to the former president of The Gambia. Mr. Jallow appeared before the committee on multiple occasions, most recently on August 7, 2025. During his testimonies, he was warned about the repercussions of providing false evidence. However, discrepancies in his statements and the forensic analysis of his laptop raised suspicions.

The committee uncovered that Mr. Jallow’s laptop contained several documents that were accessed, modified, and deleted between July 28 and July 31, 2025. These documents were directly related to the inquiry and contradicted his sworn testimony. Notably, the forensic analysis revealed documents such as internal memos, inventory files, and sales reports that were altered before his appearance before the committee.

They noted that his actions amounted to misleading the committee and obstructing its proceedings. The committee’s legal counsel, citing sections 109 and 110 of the 1997 Constitution of the Republic of The Gambia, moved for Mr. Jallow’s arrest.
