Former Soldier Abdoulie Sanyang Appears in Court

Africa-Press – Gambia. Former Gambian Armed Forces officer, Abdoulie Sanyang, was escorted by police to the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court on Thursday for a possible arraignment.

Sanyang was arrested at Banjul International Airport on Sunday, August 17, 2025, shortly after appearing on West Coast Radio’s Coffee Time with Peter Gomez. During the interview, he made a series of allegations that the government later described as carrying “serious national security implications.”

Among his claims, Sanyang alleged that the 2021 presidential election was rigged through the unlawful registration of non-Gambian nationals, allegedly facilitated by Ambassador Sheikh Omar Faye. He also asserted that the government was implicated in the ongoing murder trial involving Ousainou Bojang and his sister, Amie Bojang. Additionally, he admitted involvement, alongside others, in the arson attack on the APRC political bureau.

According to sources, Sanyang is expected to face four formal charges:

Arson, contrary to Section 283 of the Criminal Offences Act 2025.

Seditious intention, contrary to Section 48(2)(a) and punishable under Section 50(1)(a) of the Criminal Offences Act 2025.

Incitement to violence, contrary to Section 58(1)(a) of the Criminal Offences Act 2025.

Offences relating to judicial proceedings, contrary to Section 99(1)(i) of the Criminal Offences Act 2025.

The case is expected to attract significant public interest, and further details will be reported as proceedings unfold.
