Africa-Press – Gambia. Cherno Marenah, former Solicitor General and currently The Gambia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, on Tuesday appeared before the National Assembly Special Select Committee investigating the sale and disposal of assets belonging to former President Yahya Jammeh.
During his testimony, Counsel Aji Sainey Kah questioned Mr. Marenah about the procedures followed to ensure that all properties and assets were properly documented.
Mr. Marenah explained that the identification and documentation of landed properties were done in accordance with official orders.
“I do recall that a list of assets that were identified was actually prepared. I do not recall the precise details,” he told the committee.
He further testified that site visits were conducted to properties listed in the orders, eviction notices were issued to occupants, and reports of these actions were submitted to the Ministry of Justice.
“One of the major tasks that was carried out was to basically go around to most of these properties from Banjul to the Kombo and eventually send eviction notices to persons who occupy these properties,” he said.
Mr. Marenah added that relevant line ministries were notified of their roles in implementing the orders, though he could not confirm whether every agency under those ministries received direct instructions.
“As far as I recall, the line ministries were informed so that they would inform their agencies under them,” he testified.
Addressing the staffing of the Commission of Inquiry, Mr. Marenah said public servants supported the commission on a part-time basis to balance their official duties with the commission’s work.
“The idea was to basically run between the two institutions and provide the necessary support as and when needed,” he said.
