Africa-Press – Gambia. Dr. Baba Galleh Jallow, former Executive Secretary of the Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission (TRRC), has expressed concern over the inclusion of prominent supporters of former President Yahya Jammeh in the current government.
Dr. Jallow specifically pointed to the appointments of Fabakary Tombong Jatta as Speaker of the National Assembly and Seedy S.K. Njie as Deputy Speaker, describing it as counterproductive to the country’s democratic transformation efforts.
“I think it was a bad idea, and it is not helpful in any way to reshaping, transforming our country,” Dr. Jallow said. “It is not helpful, for example, to have former APRC stalwarts as the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly; that is just the reality.”
He further argued that true reconciliation must center on the victims of past abuses and the wider Gambian public, rather than focusing on reintegrating figures from the former regime. “Reconciliation is only relevant, as far as I am concerned, when it involves the victims, the people of this country,” he added.
Dr. Jallow emphasized that while he holds no personal grievances against the two leaders, their appointments undermine the spirit of democratic renewal and accountability envisioned in the post-TRRC era. “So with all due respect to those two individuals, you know, I don’t have any problems with them, but I don’t think it was a good idea to have them in the government, in the new democratic dispensation that seeks transformation of this country,” he said.
