The Gambia Chef Association, popularly known as Team Gambia, has arrived in Accra, Ghana, on Sunday and Monday respectively to participate in this year’s West African Food Festival (WAFFEST), they are supported to the festival by the Gambia Tourism Board (GTBoard) under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.
WAFFEST is an annual culinary celebration that showcases the richness and diversity of African cuisine.
Established in 2018, WAFFEST provides a unique platform for chefs across the continent to showcase their culinary skills, blending traditional recipes with modern innovations. The festival also promotes cultural exchange, youth empowerment, and regional unity through food.
Gambia’s delegation to the 2025 edition is led by Chef Musa Darboe, with the team set to compete in the highly anticipated cooking contests. Team Gambia is no stranger to success at WAFFEST. In 2019, they won Best Chef and Best Dessert of the Year in Accra, and in 2023, they were crowned champions of the Jollof Rice War Competition in Lagos, Nigeria.
This year’s festival, featuring over 20 participating countries, officially kicks off today, September 23, and runs until September 27 at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra. Attendees will enjoy live cooking demonstrations, culinary workshops, food stalls, networking opportunities, and exciting competitions that highlight the very best of West African gastronomy.
WAFFEST was founded by Chef Isaac Sackey through the Chefs Association of Ghana to unite chefs, food enthusiasts, and cultural ambassadors from across the region and beyond. Since its inception, it has grown into a premier culinary event, rotating its host countries annually. After the first two editions in Ghana (2018 and 2019), the festival was hosted in Liberia (2021), Ghana again (2022), Nigeria (2023), and Togo (2024).
The vision of WAFFEST extends beyond competition. It encourages chefs to creatively blend traditional and contemporary culinary practices, boosts local economies through tourism and hospitality, and serves as an important platform for documenting and promoting indigenous recipes and cooking methods.
As Team Gambia prepares to showcase its talents once again, the nation’s culinary reputation remains firmly on the rise in the regional and international arena.
