Gambia Deputy Speaker Presents Global Gender Equality Report

Africa-Press – Gambia. The Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of The Gambia, Hon. Seedy S.K. Njie, has presented a comprehensive report on global gender equality initiatives at the closing session of the 151st Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly.

Delivered before the IPU Governing Council in Switzerland, the report captured the key outcomes of a high-level parliamentary meeting held during the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The document emphasized the growing alignment between UN and IPU efforts to advance the empowerment of women and girls through legislative and policy reforms.

In his presentation, Hon. Njie reflected on the progress achieved and challenges encountered since the landmark Beijing Declaration on gender equality three decades ago.

“In the face of discrimination and violence against women, silence is complicity,” Hon. Njie declared. “The struggle for equality cannot be won without men standing shoulder to shoulder with women. As parliamentarians, we must ensure that history remembers us not as bystanders, but as champions.”

The Deputy Speaker urged his counterparts across national parliaments to translate the principles of the Beijing Platform for Action into tangible outcomes through progressive laws, gender-responsive budgeting, and inclusive leadership practices.

His address reaffirmed The Gambia’s active engagement in international parliamentary diplomacy and its steadfast commitment to promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment on the global stage.
