The Gambia has recently handed over the chairmanship of the Sub-regional Fisheries Commission (SRFC) to the Republic Of Guinea Conary after The Gambia completed its two year term. The event was held in Dakar Senegal where it culminated with the 40 years of celebration of the commission.
In his handing over speech, the Honorable Minister for Fisheries , Water Resources and National Assembly Matters Musa Drammeh thanked member states for their support to The Gambia during the country two years terms as the commission chair. He said the Gambia’s two years term has been marked by major advances. Strengthening the legal framework, structuring strategic priorities for the sustainability of fishery resources…strengthening sub-regional cooperation in the fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing among things.
The adoption of the…2025-2029 strategic plan marks a decisive phase for our organization, as we approach the 2030 deadline, the year of the global review of the sustainable Development Gold,” Minister Drammeh said.
The Hon Minister pointed out that the SRFC is witnessing a revitalization of the organisation’s development of sub-regional and international cooperation and the launch of new projects of great importance on shared resources and IUU fishing. The outgoing chair urged member states to be committed to statutory obligation like regular payment of national contributions. Minister Drammeh said the budgetary solidarity is a prerequisite for ensuring the autonomy and credibility of the commission and its mission for the benefit of its respective citizens.
“I am handing over the baton to the Republic of Guinea with pride, confident that it will continue with determination this momentum of strengthening, opening up and mobilizing our member states,” the outgoing chair said.
The Minister for Fisheries, Water Resources and NAMs reiterated The Gambia’s commitment to support Guinea as the new chair for the SRFC. This event marked the 22nd ordinary session of the conference of Ministers of SRFC
