Gambia Launches EU Project for Migration Support

Africa-Press – Gambia. The Gambia on Tuesday officially launched the EU-funded Flexible Mechanism for Migration and Forced Displacement Project at Ocean Bay Hotel in Bakau.

The initiative, implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Enable, and the Gambia Red Cross Society (GRCS), aims to support migrants and enhance socio-economic integration in the country.

Hon. Serigne Modou Njie, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, presided over the launch, highlighting the government’s commitment to safe migration, protection mechanisms for migrants, and pathways for reintegration and sustainable livelihoods. The project aligns with national policies, including the National Migration Policy of 2020 and 2030, the National Development Plan (2023–2027), and the National Reform and Reintegration Strategy 2025.

Mr. Abou El Mahassine Fassi-Fihri, Enable Country Director, described the initiative as a “launch of potential, partnerships, and possibilities.” Dubbed Boosting Gambian Talent, the project is designed to equip young Gambians with skills and opportunities to build businesses safely at home and abroad. Fassi-Fihri noted the program’s focus on entrepreneurship, especially in a challenging job market, emphasizing the project’s north-south approach in collaboration with Europe.

With a total budget of €3.8 million, the initiative will directly support over 300 professionals, including small and medium enterprise owners, entrepreneurs, incubators, TVET centers, and government partners. The program will focus on five priority sectors: agribusiness, green economy, construction, creative industries, and ICT.

Mr. Ebou Faye Njie, GRCS Secretary General, emphasized the organization’s dedication to improving the lives of vulnerable populations, particularly youth. He acknowledged the support of the Spanish Red Cross and praised the strong collaboration with IOM and Enable in making the project a reality.

UN Resident Coordinator Karl-Frédérick Paul highlighted the project’s alignment with The Gambia’s recovery-focused National Development Plan and the broader 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. “Migration is a critical enabler of economic development. This initiative will strengthen migration governance, enhance job creation, and expand entrepreneurship opportunities in line with national and international frameworks,” he said.

EU Ambassador to The Gambia, Mrs. Imma Roca i Cortès, reiterated the importance of managing migration responsibly and humanely. “The projects we are launching today demonstrate the shared commitment of the European Union and The Gambia to protect human dignity, prevent trafficking and smuggling, promote safe migration pathways, and ensure safe return for those in irregular situations,” she said.

The project will benefit over 30,000 migrants through integrated services, including counselling, health and nutrition support, psychosocial care, and assistance for forced displacement. Safe shelters, referral systems, and coaching mechanisms will also be established to ensure no vulnerable person, particularly children, is left behind. Around 340 beneficiaries will receive direct support to enhance skills, build sustainable livelihoods, and contribute positively to their communities.

The launch underscores a collective effort by The Gambia, international organizations, and the European Union to manage migration effectively while promoting socio-economic inclusion and opportunities for Gambians at home and abroad.
