Gambia Launches Governance Training for Csos with UNDP

Africa-Press – Gambia. Gambia Participates, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), on Tuesday launched a two-day training designed to strengthen the capacity of civil society organizations (CSOs) in democratic governance, electoral processes, and policy advocacy.

The initiative aims to equip CSOs with the knowledge and tools needed to enhance their advocacy efforts and expand their influence in shaping public policy. It also acknowledges the critical role CSOs play in fostering inclusive governance while addressing persistent challenges such as sustainability, limited technical expertise, and restricted access to resources.

Alasan Sowe, Programme Officer at Gambia Participates, emphasized the significance of CSOs in promoting good governance and democratic reform, noting that their impact is often constrained by financial limitations and political pressures.“However, we understand that civil society organizations are facing a lot of challenges, including lack of funding and political pressure, and some of them lack experts in various areas in order to enhance their advocacy strategies,” Sowe said.

He added that the training goes beyond CSOs, targeting 50 media professionals and 40 community-based organizations to create a broader coalition for advocacy.

“This is all geared towards expanding the zone for advocacy for both the community-based organizations, media, and civil society organizations to have a technical expert in order to advocate for good governance in this country,” he explained.

Through practical tools, expert insights, and strategic approaches, the training seeks to strengthen The Gambia’s advocacy landscape, contributing to good governance and the advancement of democratic reforms.
