Africa-Press – Gambia. The Republic of The Gambia and the Kingdom of Morocco have reaffirmed their long-standing diplomatic and development partnership during a ceremony marking the 26th anniversary of the enthronement of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
Held on Wednesday evening at Coco Ocean Hotel, the event brought together top government officials, diplomats, religious leaders, and invited guests. The occasion was hosted by the Chargé d’Affaires of the Kingdom of Morocco in The Gambia, Mr. Ahmed Belhadj.
In his remarks, The Gambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Sering Modou Njie, delivered a message on behalf of President Adama Barrow, congratulating King Mohammed VI, the Moroccan government, and the people on the anniversary.
“This celebration not only marks His Majesty’s reign but also highlights Morocco’s enduring journey of peace, progress, and partnership,” Minister Njie said.
He praised Morocco’s leadership in promoting South-South cooperation and regional stability under the King’s Royal Initiative for Africa. The Minister also acknowledged The Gambia’s gains from Morocco’s support across various sectors, including agriculture, education, health, and capacity building.
“These initiatives have strengthened our institutions and helped shape a more resilient future for our youth and professionals,” he added.
For his part, Mr. Belhadj Chargé d’Affaires of the Kingdom of Morocco in The Gambia described the Throne Day as a moment to reflect on Morocco’s progress over the past 26 years, citing major national projects and international engagements under King Mohammed VI’s leadership.
“Morocco has achieved strides in economic dynamism, social development, political reform, and climate diplomacy,” he said.
He highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects such as the Tangier Med Port, Africa’s first high-speed rail, and the planned Dakhla Atlantic Port. He also noted Morocco’s role as co-host of the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal, and the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
On the Morocco-Gambia relationship, Mr. Belhadj emphasized a growing and strategic partnership, pointing to 36 bilateral agreements signed to date and plans for a Morocco-Gambia Business Forum to deepen trade and investment ties.
He commended The Gambia for its continued cooperation and support, particularly in regional and international fora.
Mr. Belhadj also congratulated Hon. Sering Modou Njie on his appointment as Foreign Minister and extended best wishes to his predecessor, Dr. Mamadou Tangara, in his new role as the African Union’s Special Representative for Mali and the Sahel.
The evening concluded with a dinner reception, where guests were treated to Moroccan cuisine and cultural hospitality.
The Throne Day celebration underscored the mutual respect and growing collaboration between the two nations as they look ahead to stronger diplomatic, economic, and cultural engagements.
