Africa-Press – Gambia. The Gambia Tourism Board (GTBoard), in partnership with The Gambia Experience and the Birdwatchers Association of The Gambia, showcased the country’s birdwatching potential at the Global Birdfair 2025, held from July 11–13 at Rutland Water in the United Kingdom.

As the world’s largest annual gathering of birding and conservation communities, the Global Birdfair attracted over 10,000 participants from more than 65 countries. This year’s fair focused on the conservation of ocean bird species, particularly efforts to reduce by-catch of seabirds in the southern Pacific Ocean through sustainable fishing practices.

The Gambia’s participation aimed to position the country as a leading destination for eco-tourism and birdwatching in West Africa. With over 550 recorded bird species and a wide variety of habitats from mangroves and wetlands to savannas and coastal forests The Gambia remains one of the continent’s most accessible and rewarding destinations for bird enthusiasts.

Leading the Gambian delegation was Adama Njie, Director of Tourism Promotion at GTBoard’s UK Office. A key highlight was a presentation by Yahya Barry of the Birdwatchers Association of The Gambia, delivered at the Plover Marquee. His talk, titled “Why The Gambia Is Famous for Birdwatching in West Africa,” attracted more than 80 international birders and received enthusiastic feedback.

The delegation engaged with stakeholders, tour operators, and eco-travel advocates, promoting The Gambia as a safe, sustainable, and nature-rich destination.

Through its active presence at the Global Bird fair, The Gambia reinforced its commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable tourism, while strengthening its global appeal among the birding and nature travel community.
