Africa-Press – Gambia. The Gambia U-17 national team narrowly missed out on a semi-final berth at the WAFU-A CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier tournament after a thrilling 2-2 draw against hosts Mali.
The young Scorpions took the lead in the 50th minute when Lamin Bojang finished brilliantly after a precise assist from Alieu Drammeh. Mali responded from the penalty spot to level the score before taking the lead in the 82nd minute with a close-range finish.
Gambia’s Alagie Baba Leigh restored parity with a stunning free kick, hitting the crossbar before leaving the goalkeeper helpless and ensuring the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
Midfield sensation Augustine Junior Mendy was voted player of the match for his outstanding performance throughout the game.
Despite the valiant effort, Gambia finished third in the group with four points, behind Guinea-Bissau, who topped the table with seven points following a 4-1 comeback victory over Liberia, and Mali, who finished second with five points. Liberia ended the group stage at the bottom with no points.
The result ended Gambia’s campaign at the group stage, but the young Scorpions showed promise with exciting performances and individual displays of talent that could shape the future of the national youth team.
