Africa-Press – Gambia. Gambian journalist Kemeseng Sanneh, also known as Kexx Sanneh, has filed a case against Alport Banjul, alleging unlawful termination of his employment contract.
Sanneh, who operates under the media outlet Kexx News, filed the suit on Tuesday before Justice Coker of the Banjul High Court. The defendant, Alport Banjul, is a limited liability company incorporated under Gambian law.
According to the statement of claims, Sanneh was employed by Alport Banjul on 17 April 2025 as a media correspondent under a one-year contract, with an annual salary of D150,000. The contract reportedly included provisions on remuneration, duties, and termination, but did not restrict Sanneh’s constitutional rights to freedom of expression, association, or peaceful assembly.
Sanneh claims he was approached by other companies with lucrative offers but declined due to his contract with Alport Banjul. These included partnership proposals from Kaira Consultancy and Envy Club/Always Drive Car Rental and Sales, valued at D150,000 and D250,000 annually, respectively.
The journalist asserts that he performed his duties diligently and maintained professionalism throughout his tenure. He alleges that on 26 July 2025, Alport Banjul terminated his employment via a WhatsApp message, citing his involvement in GALA (Gambians Against Looted Assets), a civic movement that organized a lawful protest against the Gambian government.
Sanneh contends that his participation in GALA was in his personal capacity as a citizen and journalist and did not interfere with his professional duties or damage the company’s reputation. He argues that the termination was therefore unlawful and unjustified.
The plaintiff is seeking a court declaration that the termination is null and void, damages for breach of contract, outstanding salaries and benefits for the remainder of the contract, specific damages of D400,000, interest on all monetary awards at 10% per annum, legal fees of D150,000, and any other relief deemed appropriate by the court.
The case is currently assigned to Justice Coker at the Banjul High Court.
