Gambian Workers Launch New Federation

Africa-Press – Gambia. Workers across the country Tuesday converged at Paradise Suites Hotel to mark the inaugural launch of the Federation of Labour Unions of The Gambia (FLUG).

The interim president of the federation Omar Ceesay, speaking at the launching ceremony says workers’ rights will remain his top priority as he assumed leadership.

He described the event as a milestone in efforts to strengthen unity, solidarity, and representation of workers across The Gambia.

He says the establishment of the federation reflects a shared commitment to advancing the rights, welfare, and dignity of workers, adding that the organization will serve as a strong, independent and unified voice for laborers.

“We are committed to promoting social dialogue, protecting workers’ rights, enhancing capacity within affiliated unions and contributing to national development,” he remarked.

Ceesay adds that the federation, which is now formally registered and recognized, will provide a legal foundation to engage authorities and advocate on behalf of workers.

He said the congress also served as a platform to set strategic direction, strengthen cooperation among unions, and reaffirm values of transparency, accountability and inclusiveness.

The launching event was attended by international partners including the International Trade Union Confederation – Africa (ITUC-Africa), the International Solidarity Center, and the Organisation of Trade Unions of West Africa (OTUWA), among others.
