"Gambia'S Oil Prospects are High But..."

Africa-Press – Gambia. Following testimony from former President Yahya Jammeh, who accused Senegal of illicitly obtaining Gambian oil, a senior government official confirmed to the weekly newspaper The Point that there are oil prospects in Gambia due to the country’s geological formation.

However, he was quick to add that these deposits first needed to be explored to confirm the availability of oil in the country: “Seismic data has provided good technical prospects for oil, but no discoveries have been made.”

Former President Yahya Jammeh, currently in exile in Equatorial Guinea, released an audio recording last week claiming that the country possesses oil. Since the recording’s release, Gambians both inside and outside the country have reacted on social media. Some have urged the government to issue a statement clarifying the situation, while others believe Yahya Jammeh is simply making his usual statements in audio recordings.

“I can confirm that the Gambian government will issue a statement to clarify former President Jammeh’s audio message. But the truth is that the government will never stand by and allow oil to be monopolized by any party if oil deposits are discovered in the country. This is not possible. There are oil prospects in the country because of our geographical location with Senegal, but the government has not discovered anything yet. Studies and other issues are still ongoing,” a senior official told our reporter on condition of anonymity.
