Africa-Press – Gambia. The Gambia Democratic Congress said it would go ahead with a major political rally planned for Saturday, rejecting calls to reconsider after the ruling National People’s Party announced a competing event in the same area.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Omar Ceesay, a senior figure in the GDC and a former member of the National Assembly for Niamina East, accused the NPP of attempting to undermine the opposition’s gathering by scheduling its own rally in Mamuda Village, Kombo South, in the West Coast Region.
“The NPP’s sudden announcement of a political rally is designed to counter and undermine the GDC’s mega rally scheduled for Saturday,” Mr. Ceesay wrote. He urged party supporters to “stand strong and proceed with the event as planned.”
Mr. Ceesay said the GDC remained focused on expanding its political reach across the country and beyond, describing the rally as part of a broader strategy to strengthen the party’s presence in multiple political zones.
“The party is committed to exploring all possible avenues to steadily and rapidly expand its influence across various political zones, both within the country and beyond,” he said.
Looking ahead to the 2026 presidential election, Mr. Ceesay said the GDC was prepared to challenge the current political order, regardless of whether it enters into alliances with other parties. “As we approach the 2026 presidential race, the GDC is ready to challenge and disrupt the status quo, with or without a political partnership,” he said.
