Africa-Press – Gambia. Two prominent figures in the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), Auditor General and Regional Desk Officer Alhagie H. Sowe, and former National Treasurer Lamin Bojang, have resigned from the party.

Alhagie H. Sowe submitted his resignation through a letter dated 18 October 2025, without indicating plans to join another political party. In his letter, Sowe described the decision as deeply personal and difficult, reflecting on years of dedication and service to the GDC.

“This decision has not come easily. It follows years of unwavering dedication, sacrifice, and service to a party I have held close to my heart. The GDC has been more than a political organisation to me. It has been a family, a movement, and a platform through which I have strived to serve my people with integrity and purpose,” Sowe wrote. “Stepping away from this journey is one of the most difficult choices I have had to make, but it is a personal decision made after careful consideration.”

He extended his gratitude to party leader Mamma Kandeh and supporters, particularly in the Upper River Region and Jimara constituency, for their trust and support over the years.

In contrast, Lamin Bojang announced his resignation and immediate defection to the National People’s Party (NPP) through a video statement recorded at President Adama Barrow’s residence in Mankamang Kunda. In the video, Bojang expressed enthusiasm for supporting the NPP and the president’s vision for national development.

“Let us join the president for the development of the country and lay a foundation for our children and grandchildren so they do not face difficulties,” Bojang said.

He highlighted the West Coast Region as the president’s stronghold, noting that the NPP received the highest votes there in the 2021 election. “We want to consolidate that and improve on it in the 2026 presidential election,” he added.

On his Facebook page, Bojang reiterated his political shift: “Effective immediately, I have shifted my political allegiance to the NPP. I wish to thank the GDC for giving me the platform to express myself politically, and the bond that existed between us still remains strong.” He acknowledged that leaving the GDC was a difficult decision made with careful consideration.
