Africa-Press – Gambia. The Gambia Maritime Administration (GMA) donated one thousand (1000) life -saving jackets to the Gambia Navy for the Banjul -Barra crossing terminals following the breakdown of the ferries.
GMA as the agency responsible for ensuring safety of life at sea throughout Gambian waters is taking this measure to serve as a safeguard in light of the current precarious situation at the Banjul-Barra crossing.
The handing over ceremony was held at Naval Command Base in Banjul. Speaking during the handing over, Ousman Gomez, Deputy Chief of Defense Staff notes: “the donation is not merely a gesture of good will, but it is a lifeline for our naval forces who tirelessly work to safeguard our coastal waters.”
According to him, the provision of life jackets is more than just the distribution of material goods but it is a symbol of care and concern for the brave men and women.
He says the donation is a testament to the enduring partnership between the Gambia Maritime Agency and the Gambia Navy. “Time and time again, the agency has stepped up to support our naval forces, recognizing the challenges they face and providing tangible solutions.”

Gambia Navy Captain, Fatou Jaiteh, also says thecontribution by the Gambia Maritime Administration will undoubtedly benefit many individuals and passenger boat owners by providing them with essential safety equipment.
She states that at this time that the ferries are not operating, the travelers crossing by local boats is overwhelming, equally the need to help promote water safety. “This gesture will enhance the Navy’s effort to enforce compliance to wearing lifejackets and underscores the importance of being prepared for emergencies,” she reiterated.
Deputy Director General of Gambia Maritime Administration, Mr. Ousman Touray also explained that they must enforce the wearing of these life jackets as a condition for boarding canoes at these crossing points.
“The load limits and operating times of Canoe will be enforced to the letter at each terminal (07.00hrs-19.00hrs). We will only also allow GMA certified and licensed boats to operate at these landing sites,” he disclosed.
The safety of our citizens must always remain paramount, especially during times of increased demand and limited transportation options, he stressed.
“We have sanctioned the donation of 1000 marine life jackets for passengers crossing the Banjul-Barra crossing terminals. This Administration, in the same vein is donating five hundred (500) jackets to canoe operators at critical points along The River Gambia in the upcountry.”
He added that the life jackets were a symbol of their commitment to the well-being of people and would be under the able care of the Gambia Navy. “Through their dedicated men, tasked with enforcing the safety of life and property at these crossing points, we aim to ensure that every journey undertaken by canoe transportation across the mouth of The River Gambia is safeguarded,” Touray concluded.
