Africa-Press – Gambia. The Gambian Government last Tuesday sealed a deal worth over one billion dalasis for the construction of 155.9 km of feeder roads.
The deal, which involved the signing of three contracts worth USD 16,502,061.30 (over GMD 1.1 billion) for the construction of roads, took place in Kotu with three contractors selected for the project.
In a related development, a USD 2,248,643.82 approximately GMD 162,959,217.64) contract for the detailed design, supply, and construction of the Bansang Water Treatment Plant and storage tanks in Bansang, Central River Region South, was awarded to SINCO SPA.
The road contracts, divided into three lots, are financed under the Gambia Government–World Bank-funded GIRAV project and coordinated by the Central Projects Coordinating Unit (CPCU) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Security. The initiative aims to enhance rural connectivity and improve market access for farmers nationwide.
Mr. Abdoulie Touray, Coordinator of the GIRAV project and CPCU, explained that the contracts fell under subcomponent 1.4: Improving Rural Connectivity. This subcomponent targets the construction of a total of 204.7 km of single-surfaced feeder roads to facilitate farmers’ access to markets and improve the movement of people and services. He highlighted that the GIRAV portfolio, funded with a USD 108 million grant from the World Bank, complemented by government contributions and matching grants, underscores the government’s commitment to agriculture.
Hon. Demba Sabally, the Minister of Agriculture, described the initiative as a “giant step” and a demonstration of President Adama Barrow’s commitment to rural development and agricultural infrastructure. He noted that improved road networks would attract economic activities and boost trade, including across borders.
On the Bansang water project, Hon. Sabally expressed hope that it would enable NAWEC to increase water supply to rural areas, benefiting smallholder farmers, agribusinesses, and schools, thereby improving GIRAV development outcomes. He also thanked the World Bank Group for its continued support toward inclusive growth and improved rural infrastructure.
Hon. Ebrima Sillah, the Minister of Works, commended the Ministry of Agriculture for prioritizing roads in agricultural projects. He assured full support from his ministry and the National Road Authority and emphasized that double surfacing would ensure road durability.
