Groundnut Season Opens with Renewed Emphasis on Transparency

Africa-Press – Gambia. The National Food Security Processing and Marketing Corporation (NFSCPM) has moved to tighten oversight of the upcoming groundnut trading season, issuing a firm directive to Secco presidents to ensure transparency, accountability, and timely service to farmers.

Muhammed Njie, the corporation’s managing director, urged local buying centers to avoid the delays, disputes, and irregularities that marred last year’s operations. “Secco presidents must avoid making farmers cry this year. As a government, we want everything to run smoothly for the farmers,” Mr. Njie said. “We cannot afford a repeat of last year’s issues.”

Mr. Njie said the corporation is placing particular emphasis on accurate screening and weighing of groundnuts, timely payments, and respectful service delivery. “Screen the nuts properly and pay the farmers on time,” he said. “They depend on this income, and it is our duty to serve them with honesty and efficiency.”

He also underscored that contractual responsibility rests squarely with Secco presidents, not administrative staff. “We sign contracts with the Secco presidents, not the secretaries,” he said. “It is the presidents who are accountable, and we expect them to take full responsibility for compliance and proper management.”

The NFSCPM is expected to maintain heightened supervision throughout the season, with officials saying the goal is to rebuild trust, strengthen fairness in the buying process, and improve nationwide service delivery to farmers.
