Hamat Bah Blames Bad Journalism for Misconceptions

Africa-Press – Gambia. Hamat NK Bah, the Minister of Local Government, Lands, and Religious Affairs, on Tuesday, accused sections of the media of fueling misinformation about the sale and disposal of assets belonging to former president Yahya Jammeh.

Testifying before the National Assembly’s special select committee investigating the matter, Mr. Bah—who previously served as tourism minister—said he felt compelled to appear in order to “shed light on the misconceptions, misinformation, and disinformation” circulating about the management of Jammeh’s properties.

“I think it is very important that I came to this committee in order to shed light on some of the misconceptions, misinformation, and disinformation that have been spread around this issue of sales of Yahya Jammeh’s assets and disposal,” he said.

Minister Bah argued that inaccurate media reporting contributed significantly to public confusion, warning that such misinformation poses risks to national security and unity.

“I believe that, firmly speaking, it is an outcome of bad journalism that has led us to where we are. After reading the Republican article, regarding the whole issue of Jammeh, I went through it, and I realized that there is a lot of misinformation regarding this, and that is the reason parliament got interested because parliament represents the people,” he added.

He emphasized the critical role of legislative oversight in matters of national concern, noting that it is essential for Parliament to clarify issues and present accurate information to the public.

“Although the slow pace was not one of mine, I would have thought that in a month this committee would wrap up and inform the general public of the outcome of their investigation,” he said.
