Africa-Press – Gambia. Hamat N.K. Bah, former Minister of Tourism and current Minister of Lands, Regional Government, and Religious Affairs, has described the failure to construct eco-tourism lodges as the most significant shortcoming of his tenure in the tourism sector.
Speaking in a recent appearance on QTV’s State of Affairs programme, Minister Bah expressed deep disappointment over the project’s non-implementation, which was intended to promote domestic tourism and diversify the sector.
“Our biggest failure, as I always go to bed and remember, is our inability to get those lodges built,” he noted.
According to Bah, the project’s failure stemmed in part from his limited involvement. He admitted that delegating too much authority to others without playing a more hands-on role was a misstep. “Leaving it too much to certain people without being involved was a mistake,” he acknowledged.
The Gambia Tourism Board was to build a four-star hotel in Barra and eco-lodges in Sotuma Samba Hai, Kunkilling, and Nyaga Bantang, respectively.
The Gambia Tourism Board had planned to construct a four-star hotel in Barra, along with eco-lodges in Sotuma Samba Hai, Kunkilling, and Nyaga Bantang. However, these projects never materialized during his tenure.
Reflecting on his achievements, Bah highlighted that he assumed office in the aftermath of the Ebola crisis and during a period of political transition. Despite those challenges, he said his ministry succeeded in restoring The Gambia’s international image and significantly increasing tourist arrivals.
