Africa-Press – Gambia. The Association of Health Journalists (AOHJ) is set to host its maiden Awards for Excellence in December 2025, aimed at recognizing outstanding health reporting across print, broadcast, and online media.

Speaking to the press, the Association’s Public Relations Officer, Yusupha Bojang, said the awards will honour journalists who have demonstrated a strong commitment to covering health-related issues with depth, accuracy, and public relevance.

He noted that the initiative is designed to reward impactful stories that bring critical health issues to light. “These awards help focus attention on important health matters, make complex topics accessible to the wider public, and inform discussions on health policy and patient rights,” Bojang said.

According to him, the awards also aim to promote professional recognition for journalists, encourage higher standards of reporting, and raise awareness about underreported health concerns. “Ultimately, this will contribute to stronger health journalism and a more informed society,” he added.

The inaugural edition will feature eight award categories, most of which are topic-based. Entries will be accepted across various media platforms, including newspapers, magazines, online outlets, radio, and television.

Bojang described the awards as a brainchild of the Association’s executive by health journalists, for health journalists. He called on institutions and philanthropists to support the initiative, stressing its role in promoting public health literacy.

“Supporting these awards will help strengthen accurate and quality reporting on health issues, promote informed decision-making by individuals, and hold the healthcare system accountable,” he said.
