Fatoumatta Njai, representative for Banjul south has table a motion calling on the parliamentarians to withdraw the controversial National Assembly members’ 54 million dalasi loan scheme.

The Hon. Njai table the motion during the committee sitting for the final approval of the budget allocation to various institutions. However, majority of the parliamentarian disagreed with her and voted against the motion.

Speaking to this medium in a sideline of the assembly, Hon. Njai defended her motion, saying “As national assembly members, we are here to represent the people and after the approved loan scheme motion was laid in Parliament we have heard the outcries of the people and we have to listen to them because they are the reason we are in parliament.”

She said allowing the NAMs to take the loan scheme is contradicting with her personal principles and added that she did not go to the parliament to enrich herself but serve national interest.

The lawmaker said the her colleagues should have think of pumping this 54 million dalasi somewhere else so that it has impact on the public rather than building themselves financially.

This is not the right time besides we must bear in mind that public outcry was made recently on the loan scheme. And we only have one year to go. I personally will not take the loan because it is not in line with my principles,” she said.
