Africa-Press – Gambia. In a significant diplomatic move, the Hungarian government Sunday 10th August 2025, awarded prestigious scholarships to ten 10) deserving Gambian students to pursue higher education in Hungary.
The awards which were made through Hungary’s consulate in The Gambia were granted under the Hungarian “Stipendium Hungaricum” Program, the flagship initiative of Hungary’s government to promote international academic exchange.
Speaking at the event held at the Consulate’s main office in Bijilo, Head of the Consular Section, Ricard Majtan, congratulated the beneficiaries and urged them to remain dedicated throughout their studies.
“We urge you to represent your country well,” Majtan said. “This initiative is on-going, so we encourage you to pursue your studies with utmost seriousness and be exemplary representatives of the Gambian people.”
The awardees were selected through a rigorous two-staged process coordinated by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MOHERST).
Mamadou Alpha Jallow, one of the scholarship recipients, who plans to pursue a master’s degree in applied mathematics, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity.
“This is an outstanding chance to gain knowledge and equip myself to come back and serve my country meaningfully,” Jallow remarked.
Another beneficiary, Muhammed Barry, who will pursue a PhD in educational sciences, highlighted the need for expertise to improve The Gambia’s education sector. “Given the current situation of our education system, we need people with broader perspectives and experience to help bring about meaningful improvements,” he stated.
The students are expected to depart for Hungary before the end of August, with their studies scheduled to commence in early September under the Stipendium Hungaricum program. They carry the hopes of their families and the nation, as well as the promise of strengthening the academic and cultural ties between Banjul and Budapest.
