Africa-Press – Gambia. Impact Health The Gambia, a Minnesota-based nonprofit, has delivered a shipment of essential supplies to Tanka Tanka Psychiatric Hospital, the country’s only inpatient mental health facility, as part of an effort to bolster care for patients who advocates say are too often overlooked.
The donation, comprising hygiene and feminine products, clothing, blankets, and mattresses, was formally handed over on Friday at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in Banjul before being dispatched to Tanka Tanka. Hospital officials said the supplies would help improve conditions for some of the nation’s most vulnerable people, particularly as the dry and dusty harmattan season approaches.
Abdou Wahab Manjang, the founder and chief executive of Impact Health The Gambia, said the initiative grew out of a concept developed last year to address persistent gaps in mental health care. He credited Gambian volunteers and supporters in the United States for helping mobilize the materials.
“I want to express our gratitude to all our donors and our sisters in the Gambia,” Mr. Manjang said. “We are grateful for your support, and we are looking forward to expanding this.”
Hospital officials welcomed the gesture. Kebba Sanneh, the principal public relations officer at the teaching hospital, described the donation as timely, noting that mental health services receive limited attention and resources.
“This is something that we would hope other organizations will emulate, looking at the country as one of the places where help is needed. On behalf of the hospital’s board of directors, management, and staff, we thank you for thinking of us,” Mr. Sanneh said.
Binta Sanneh, the principal supply officer at EFSTH, echoed the praise, saying the donation carried significant meaning for the hospital. She added that it was heartening to know that Impact Health The Gambia had considered their needs.
The donation is the latest in a series of recent interventions by Impact Health The Gambia. Earlier this month, the group organized a free pediatric surgical screening and delivered essential supplies to the teaching hospital, and donated additional medical materials to Mandorry Clinic.
