Interior Minister Promises Transparent Peaceful Elections 2026

Africa-Press – Gambia. The Minister of Interior, Abdoulie Sanyang, has assured Gambians that the government is taking concrete steps to guarantee a transparent, credible, and peaceful presidential election in 2026.

Speaking during an oral question-and-answer session with the National Assembly on Wednesday, Minister Sanyang said preparations are already underway to strengthen the country’s electoral environment.

“Preparations are on the way to ensure transparent and peaceful 2026 elections, including equipment assessment, operational planning, and capacity building,” he told lawmakers.

The Interior Minister explained that the government, through his ministry, is working closely with international partners such as the UNDP, UNESCO, and other UN agencies under the Infrastructure for Peace Project 2024–2027. The initiative, he noted, is designed to reinforce peacebuilding and social cohesion nationwide ahead of the elections.

According to him, the Gambia Police Force is undergoing training on the Hate Speech Act, while the cybercrime and intelligence units are being strengthened to effectively monitor and detect online expressions of political and religious intolerance.

“The Gambia Police Force is being trained on the hate speech act, and the capacity of the cybercrime and intelligence unit is enhanced to effectively monitor and detect comments of political and religious intolerance,” he said.

Minister Sanyang also highlighted ongoing operational planning to ensure nationwide election security. This includes reviewing equipment requirements, updating protocols, and building the capacity of officers to manage election-related challenges.

As part of broader efforts to enhance professionalism, ten police officers are set to travel abroad for specialized training.

“Through bilateral cooperation with Turkey, 10 police officers will soon undergo a training of trainers course on election security, covering all aspects of election preparations and management,” he confirmed.

The minister reiterated that these measures reflect the government’s commitment to upholding peace, stability, and credibility in the conduct of the 2026 presidential elections.
