Africa-Press – Gambia. A letter dated November 3, 2025, and posted on the APRC official page, confirmed that former President Yahya Jammeh will formally notify the Office of the President and the Speaker of the National Assembly of his planned return to The Gambia later this month.
The correspondence also states that copies will be sent to ECOWAS, the African Union (AU), United Nations (UN) Commissions, and all diplomatic missions in The Gambia.
The letter further indicates that Momodou Yafaye Tamba has been mandated to act and speak on behalf of former President Jammeh. It asserts that neither the Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission (TRRC) nor the Janneh Commission holds legal authority under Gambian law.
“Furthermore, by their own acts and omissions, these bodies and/or their resultant white papers are considered null and void in law, and therefore neither impede nor impinge on the rights and privileges of H.E. Former President Jammeh as a citizen, a political leader, and a former president and head of state,” the letter stated.
The letter stated that former President Jammeh has been constitutionally entitled to these rights since January 21, 2017, the date he relinquished office and left The Gambia in the interest of peace, national cohesion, and stability.
It further called for the immediate provision of statutory guarantees and constitutional protections appropriate for a former head of state.
The correspondence emphasized that such measures are essential to fully recognize, respect, and safeguard the fundamental rights, dignity, and security of former President Jammeh, in strict compliance with the Constitution of The Gambia and the provisions of the ECOWAS–AU–UN Joint Agreement.
It added, “Former President Jammeh’s return is asserted as a constitutional right, specifically in accordance with the provisions of the ECOWAS–AU–UN Joint Agreement of 21st January 2017, which guarantees his liberty to return to The Gambia at any time of his choosing.”
The letter also highlighted that former President Jammeh remains committed to a peaceful return, guided by faith and patriotism.
It concluded by assuring Gambians that his return will be marked solely by peace, unity, and security.
