The National Assembly of The Gambia, via an official Facebook statement, announced that the First Ordinary Session of the 15th Legislature of Senegal concluded on Monday with a compelling call from Hon. Speaker Fabakary Tombong Jatta for enhanced regional parliamentary collaboration.
In his keynote address, Speaker Jatta underscored the vital role that legislative bodies play in advancing stability, development, and democratic governance throughout West Africa.
Speaking before an esteemed audience comprising Senegalese parliamentarians, government officials, and diplomatic representatives, Speaker Jatta commended the Senegalese National Assembly for its productive session and highlighted the shared democratic values and ambitions that unite The Gambia and Senegal.
“Our two nations, inextricably linked by geography, history, and culture, stand as beacons of democracy in our subregion,” Speaker Jatta stated. “It is through the robust functioning of institutions like our respective national assemblies that the will of the people is truly represented and their aspirations for peace and prosperity are realised,” he said.
He further emphasized the necessity of deepening parliamentary cooperation across the region. Speaker Jatta advocated for regular exchanges of best practices, collaborative legislative initiatives, and coordinated responses to shared challenges including economic integration, security, climate change, and migration.
“The complex challenges facing our region transcend national borders,” he remarked. “No single parliament can effectively address them in isolation. We must leverage our collective wisdom, experience, and legislative power to craft solutions that benefit all our citizens,” Speaker Jatta stressed,” He Said.
Concluding his address, Speaker Jatta highlighted the critical role of enhanced inter-parliamentary dialogue in harmonizing laws, promoting good governance, and reinforcing regional institutions such as ECOWAS.
