Justice Minister Denies Written Proof on Jammeh Assets

Africa-Press – Gambia. The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dawda A. Jallow, has told the National Assembly’s Special Select Committee probing the sale and disposal of former President Jammeh’s assets that his Ministry has not found any written evidence confirming whether due diligence was conducted on key individuals involved in the process.

Appearing before the committee on Monday, Jallow made it clear that while he could not say the checks were never done there was no official record in his Ministry to show they were. “If I do find a record of it, I will provide it,” he assured lawmakers. “If I don’t see it, I wouldn’t say due diligence was not done but my answer would be that I couldn’t find any written evidence of due diligence.”

The Janneh Commission, set up in 2017, identified millions worth of assets allegedly linked to the former president. The National Assembly committee is now investigating how those assets were handled, sold or transferred, and whether legal safeguards were followed to protect the state’s interest.

During his testimony, the Justice Minister explained that the legal advice given by his Ministry was meant strictly for the government’s use and was not to be relied on by any third party without written consent. He also revealed that three named staff from his Ministry worked with the Janneh Commission alongside their regular duties.

He added that commissions of inquiry maintain independence in carrying out their mandates, with the Ministry acting mainly as an oversight or liaison body for logistics, budget, and administrative matters. “Contact is normal,” he said, explaining that commissions often engage with the ministry for operational support or to extend their mandate if needed.

The committee’s probe continues this week as lawmakers dig deeper into the management of Jammeh’s assets and whether all legal and procedural requirements were fully met.

The Attorney General assured that any further records found would be made available to the committee to support its final findings.
