Africa-Press – Gambia. The Embassy of the Republic of Korea accredited to the Republic of The Gambia (resident in Dakar, Senegal) hosted a special event in the evening on Thursday, 11 September 2025, at the Ebunjan theatre , to commemorate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Korea and the Republic of The Gambia.

The event, hosted by H.E. Mr. Hyuk-woon Kwon, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to The Gambia (resident in Senegal), brought together The Gambians, including the Government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and the Korean community in The Gambia.

The evening offered the unique opportunity to experience Korean culture in its many forms — traditional attire (Hanbok), music, dance, and cuisine — all showcased in one place. A highlight of the evening was the performance by a Korean traditional dance troupe visiting The Gambia directly from Korea, which presented a captivating program demonstrating Korea’s rich cultural heritage and artistic dynamism. The performance served not only as cultural entertainment, but also as a bridge of understanding and friendship between the peoples of Korea and The Gambia.

Ambassador Kwon highlighted that over the past six decades, Korea and The Gambia have built a close relationship based on mutual respect and shared values such as human rights and democracy. He noted Korea’s consistent support for The Gambia’s peace building and transitional justice efforts, as well as its commitment to developing human capacity and cooperating in agriculture and food security to strengthen local capacities and promote self-sufficiency.

Mr. Muhammed Jah, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Korea in The Gambia, expressed his gratitude for Korea’s long-standing support to The Gambia in various fields over the sixty years. He said he was proud to serve as Honorary Consul of the Republic of Korea and pledged to continue his efforts to strengthen the relations between the two countries.

H.E. Mr. Sering Modou Njie, Minister of Foreign Affairs of The Gambia, expressed appreciation for Korea’s longstanding cooperation with The Gambia. He emphasized the importance of expanding bilateral cooperation in areas such as agriculture and education, underscoring that Korea’s partnership is highly valued in The Gambia’s pursuit of progress and prosperity.

The commemoration not only celebrated the historical milestone of 60 years of diplomatic ties, but also reaffirmed that Korea and The Gambia are building a true partnership for the future, ready to embark on the next six decades together.
