Africa-Press – Gambia. Hon. Yahya Menteng Sanyang, the National Assembly Member (NAM) for Latrikunda Sabiji, has called on lawmakers to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Adama Barrow if he fails to reinstate Auditor General Modou Ceesay, describing the president’s actions as unconstitutional.
Sanyang argued that the president has repeatedly violated the Constitution and warned that the legislature must take decisive action to safeguard democratic principles.
“I will urge these National Assembly members to initiate impeachment proceedings if the president doesn’t reverse this decision,” he declared.
The Latrikunda Sabiji NAM stressed that the National Assembly must rise to the occasion and resist executive interference in independent state institutions.
“Honorable speaker, what is before the parliament today is to show the Gambian people that we have a strong parliament or we have a weak parliament. Because this parliament today needs to rise for the occasion to restore the freedom of expression in this country and stop the executive interference into public bodies,” he said.
Citing Ghana as an example, Sanyang noted that the Ghanaian courts had affirmed the independence of their Auditor General by ruling against executive interference. He urged The Gambia to uphold similar standards.
“This is not acceptable, and the president should change immediately. He should change his mind, and I urge this National Assembly—the president has violated the constitution more than 20 times, and he only has 18 National Assembly members here,” Sanyang said.
