Africa-Press – Gambia. The National Assembly yesterday took a significant step toward revising lawmakers’ remuneration as members advanced the National Assembly Salaries and Pensions (Amendment) Bill, 2025, for further scrutiny.
The bill, which proposes adjustments to the pay structure and post-service pension packages of legislators, was committed to the Committee of the Whole Assembly. Honorable Sulayman Jammeh, the member for Bundungka Kunda, moved the motion, which was seconded by Honorable Biram JS Sowe of Niamina West.
If enacted, the amendment would revise both monthly salaries and retirement entitlements for sitting members, a development that has already sparked public debate beyond the Assembly.
The proposed changes come at a time when many Gambians continue to face rising living costs, placing added pressure on lawmakers to justify increases to their own benefits.
Wednesday’s session also saw the referral of three other major bills the Gambia Integrated Coastal Zone Management Bill, the National Food Security Corporation Bill, and the Gambia National Climate Change Bill to relevant committees.
With the Salaries and Pensions Amendment Bill now before the Committee of the Whole Assembly, members are expected to subject the proposed pay and pension increases to more detailed examination in the days ahead.
