Africa-Press – Gambia. Prominent Gambian lawyer, Lamin J. Darboe, has officially entered the race for the United Democratic Party’s (UDP) flagbearership, becoming the latest aspirant to submit his application ahead of today’s September 2nd deadline.

Darboe now joins Kanifing Municipal Council Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda and veteran politician and party leader, ANM Ousainu Darboe, who have also formally lodged their bids to lead the country’s largest opposition party into the next presidential election.

This is not the first time Lamin J. Darboe has expressed interest in the UDP leadership. He previously submitted his application during the party’s 2021 selection process. However, in a recent interview, he voiced dissatisfaction, alleging that he was not granted an interview at the time despite meeting the requirements.

With the deadline closing today, the UDP is expected to begin the vetting and internal processes that will determine who emerges as the party’s next standard-bearer. The contest is seen as a pivotal moment for the UDP as it prepares for future national elections.
