Africa-Press – Gambia. Prominent human rights lawyer and former United Democratic Party (UDP) flag bearer aspirant, Lamin J. Darboe, has confirmed his intention to contest the 2026 presidential election as an independent candidate.
In an interview , Mr. Darboe clarified his past political affiliation and outlined his next steps.
“Well, just to clarify, I was never a member of the UDP executive, but going forward, yes, hopefully I will be holding a press conference within the month to announce my intention to run for president as an independent candidate,” he said.
Darboe further noted that while he plans to run independently, he remains open to working with like-minded political groups. “Within a coalition, hopefully yes,” he added.
According to Mr. Darboe, the upcoming press conference—expected to take place within the month—will provide further details on his campaign platform, strategy, and potential political partnerships as he prepares to officially launch his presidential bid.
