Livestock Marketing Agency Director Fails to Testify

Africa-Press – Gambia. The Director General of the Gambia Livestock Marketing Agency (GLMA), Momodou Darboe, on Monday failed to testify before the National Assembly’s Special Select Committee probing the sale and disposal of assets identified by the Janneh Commission.

Darboe appeared before the committee but did not deliver his statement as expected, citing what he described as a mix-up with dates in his official summons. According to Darboe, he received two letters from the committee one requesting him to produce documents and another summoning him to appear for questioning. However, he claimed the conflicting dates in the letters led to confusion within his management.

In his explanation to the committee, Darboe apologised for failing to submit his statement ahead of the sitting, admitting that the oversight was an error from his office. He read out a letter of apology addressed to the committee, explaining that the letter he received indicated he should appear on the 21st of July instead of the 17th.

Committee members, while accepting his apology, expressed disappointment at the lapse, warning that such delays risk obstructing the important work of the inquiry. They reminded Darboe that under the 1997 Constitution and National Assembly standing orders, he is obliged to cooperate fully and truthfully, and to respect all summons issued by the committee.

Chairing the session, the committee warned that the GLMA as an institution must treat its responsibilities to the Assembly with the seriousness they deserve. Darboe was told to prepare his full statement immediately and return to testify before the committee on Tuesday at 11am.

The Special Select Committee is investigating the sale and disposal of assets belonging to the former regime as highlighted in the Janneh Commission report. Darboe is expected to shed light on his agency’s role and any related transactions.
