Africa-Press – Gambia. Mamadi Kurang Demands Retraction, Apology, and D200 Million in Damages Over Alleged Defamation.

Mr. Alhaji Mamadi Kurang, through his legal representatives—AJ Njie & Associates Law Chambers and Gainako Law Chambers—has formally demanded a retraction, public apology, and financial compensation from Mrs. Amie Bensouda, citing defamatory statements allegedly made in a recent publication.

The dispute arises from a letter dated May 16, 2025, issued by Ms. Amie N.D. Bensouda and titled “Cease and Desist Notice: Re: Defamatory Statements.” Mr. Kurang’s legal team has categorically rejected the claims contained therein, maintaining that their client’s record remains untarnished and his reputation well-established.

According to AJ Njie & Associates, Mr. Kurang is a respected professional with a distinguished career, including consultancy roles with leading international organizations such as USAID and ActionAid International. His legal team further emphasized his commendable service as Secretary to the Janneh Commission, where he was recognized for his integrity and diligence. They contend that his strict adherence to ethical standards ultimately led to the premature termination of his tenure.

The legal correspondence also affirms that Mr. Kurang’s employment under the Office of the Attorney General, in both advisory and legal capacities, was publicly documented and subject to democratic scrutiny.

Mr. Kurang’s lawyers have strongly objected to what they describe as a “tendentious and baseless narrative” presented in Ms. Bensouda’s letter. The letter, they argue, falsely portrays Mr. Kurang as:

A dishonest individual involved in unlawful conduct

Someone who misappropriated proceeds from the sale of tractors and other assets during his tenure

A person of poor character and questionable judgment

An opportunist exploiting others for personal gain

A manipulative fraudster

Mr. Kurang has categorically denied all such allegations, describing them as an attempt to discredit and silence him, and to infringe upon his constitutional right to free expression.

In response, Mr. Kurang, through his legal counsel, has issued the following demands:

A full and formal retraction of the alleged defamatory publication, to be issued with the same visibility and prominence as the original content

A public apology, to be published through the same channels used for the original statements and conveyed via his legal representatives

Payment of Two Hundred Million Dalasis (D200,000,000) in compensatory damages for the harm suffered

An immediate halt to any further defamatory remarks or publications about Mr. Kurang

His legal team has given a 14-day deadline for compliance. Should the demands not be met within this timeframe, they have stated their intention to pursue legal action aimed at restoring Mr. Kurang’s reputation and holding the responsible party accountable.
