Mayor Bensouda Advised to Exercise Patience and Protect his Legacy

Africa-Press – Gambia. Melville Robertson Roberts, a legal practitioner and political commentator, has urged Talib Bensouda to exhibit patience and safeguard his legacy within the United Democratic Party (UDP).

His remarks come amid growing tensions within the UDP regarding the party’s candidate for the upcoming 2026 presidential election against the incumbent President Adama Barrow.

Roberts emphasizes that there are pivotal moments in a person’s life when ambition and destiny intersect, determining whether history is made or broken. He believes Bensouda currently finds himself at such a crossroads. “Talib is young, gifted, and highly regarded throughout The Gambia,” he stated.

Also, “In ordinary homes, his name inspires hope; among the youth, he embodies the promise of renewal; and with elders, he symbolizes continuity.”

However, Roberts asserted that with this admiration comes a critical realization: “In politics, timing is everything. Greatness is never rushed; it is cultivated. The seed of leadership does not bloom by force; it matures in its due season.”

He cautioned, “If you were to leave the UDP now, turning your back on the family and the foundation that nurtured you to seek your own path, you would not only harm your legacy but also the very people who see a future in you. The masses would question, ‘If Talib could abandon the platform that raised him, how can he stand with us in our hour of need?’”

Roberts advised the KMC Mayor to ignore the external noise and suggested he take a moment for introspection. “Consult your mother and brothers, speak with your spouse and close friends, those who are not politically motivated. In politics, there are no permanent friends or enemies. Those who support you today may turn against you tomorrow for their own gain,” he warned.

He pointed out that Gambians view Mayor Talib as a leader for the future, not a divisive force for the present. He cautioned that if he were to fracture the opposition by leaving, the incumbent would be the sole beneficiary, and history would judge him harshly for it.

Roberts highlighted the importance of patience, recalling that Nelson Mandela waited 27 years for destiny to unfold in his favor.
