Africa-Press – Gambia. The Mayor of Kanifing Municipal Council, Talib Ahmed Bensouda, has expressed confidence that he can defeat President Adama Barrow in the 2026 presidential elections, should he be selected as the United Democratic Party (UDP) flagbearer.
Speaking to journalists after appearing before the UDP’s selection panel, Mayor Bensouda said, “If they select me, I am confident that I will win against President Adama Barrow.”
He praised the party’s leadership, noting the strong foundation laid by UDP leader Ousainou Darboe, which he believes continues to inspire younger members to take on leadership roles within the party.
“We all know that our party leader, Ousainou Darboe, has built a strong party. He has nurtured a generation that is now capable of continuing his vision and completing the work he started,” Bensouda said.
Addressing internal debates within the party regarding his candidacy, Mayor Bensouda sought to clarify misunderstandings about the timing of his application relative to Darboe’s.
“While there has been some discussion about differences between what I said and what I did, I want to clarify that when I submitted my application, I was informed that the party leader had not yet applied. I filed my application at the last minute with full knowledge of this,” he explained.
He added that Darboe’s decision to also seek the flagbearer position is his democratic right, while emphasizing that his own motivation is to serve the Gambian people under the UDP banner.
“We respect that he has applied—that is his right. My focus is on the process and serving the country in the name of the party and in honor of his legacy,” Bensouda said.
