Mayor Bensouda Seeks UDP Flagbearer Position

Africa-Press – Gambia. Press has learned from reliable sources that Talib Ahmed Bensouda, Mayor of the Kanifing Municipal Council and National Organizing Secretary of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has officially submitted his application to contest for the party’s flagbearer position in the 2026 presidential elections.

Mayor Bensouda’s decision to formally enter the race makes him the first confirmed aspirant for the UDP ticket. At 38, he represents a younger generation of leadership within the party, a factor that could reshape the internal dynamics of The Gambia’s largest opposition movement. His candidacy is likely to spark debate over continuity and renewal at a critical juncture for the UDP.

Party leader and secretary general, Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, has long been synonymous with the UDP, having led it since its formation in 1996. Darboe has already expressed his intention to seek the flagbearer position once again, which would mark his sixth attempt to lead the party into a presidential election. However, as of press time, it remains unclear whether he has formally submitted his application.

If Darboe proceeds, the UDP could face one of its most defining internal contests yet: a choice between rallying once more behind its veteran leader or handing the mantle to a younger figure. Observers say such a contest would not only test party unity but also signal how the UDP intends to position itself against the incumbent National People’s Party (NPP) in 2026.

The development underscores the beginning of an important chapter in Gambian politics, as the UDP weighs its leadership future and the electorate watches closely for signs of how the opposition might present its challenge in the coming presidential race.
