Minister Updates Children Nams on Online Protection Policy

Africa-Press – Gambia. Lamin Jabbie, Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, has announced that his ministry has finalized the validation of the Children and Vulnerable Groups Online Protection Policy, aimed at safeguarding minors in the digital space.

He made the announcement during a special edition of the Mansa Kunda Intergenerational Dialogue, where he engaged with National Assembly Members of the Children’s Assembly.

“We need to make sure the online presence of children is secured while we do not also compromise their freedom of expression,” Minister Jabbie stated. He expressed confidence that the new policy will strike a balance between digital safety and children’s rights online.

Highlighting both the opportunities and risks of digital technology, he noted, “As mobile phones and computers contribute to your growth, they equally have both negative and positive impacts. These are things we are really looking at.”

Minister Jabbie further emphasized that ICT is vital for national development, adding that if young people use it responsibly, the country’s future will be brighter. “But if you abuse it today and you are not protected and not ready to be protected, the future of this country will be in a mess,” he cautioned.

He concluded by reminding the Children NAMs that online platforms should not be seen only as a threat, but rather as tools that can significantly enhance personal growth and national development when used properly.
